An Urgent Financial Appeal from our Idomeni Refugee Project partners

Remember that March 2016 appeal to our Gene Keys community for help in a humanitarian crisis at the Greek border? Perhaps you donated?
Samantha (Sam) Nelson’s tale of the refugees’ plight, and how she and husband Theowere helping moved Richard to immediate action. His call to Gene Keys family and friends raised $40,000 in two weeks, while he travelled to the Greek border to help provide temporary refugee shelters and send back on-the-ground reports.
When Idomeni closed, the Nelsons co-founded a Greek refugee housing and social project with Greek nationals in Thessaloniki, Filoxenia International. Sam also introduced us to a remarkable group of volunteers. We established a great connection with Mobile Info Team, who give practical advice to asylum seekers.
The Society has been channeling member donations to MIT since 2016 and, thanks to their excellent updates, we’ve been able to keep our Gene Keys community well informed on the refugee situation in Greece.
Now we have had an emergency appeal from Sam. A fresh influx of refugees into northern Greece and new funder priorities has created an unexpected crisis for Filoxenia.
“Today we received news from UNHCR that they are interested to expand what Filoxenia does, but will not support existing families still awaiting reunification.
Currently we house four families and provide social support to 100 people with our social hub/school/kindergarten. All are mothers and children – 14 of them under the age of 10. Three families have been with us for almost 2 years. We’ve been careful with funds and can last another month. Beyond this we have nothing.
UNHCR had previously indicated they would take over the financial aspect of the housing from mid-June. It is a sudden blow to realise that stability we thought we’d created has vanished.”
The Society in turn is appealing to the generosity of our Gene Keys community members:
Can you help? Will you help? A donation from you may help Filoxenia sustain these four stranded families to secure the vital time needed for their asylum cases to be heard.
You can be sure that MIT will also be doing all they can to help resolve the cases.
Donate here or use the button below, and remember to check Idomeni Refugee Fund in the option box before you enter the amount you wish to donate.

New Website Features
The Pulse can now be found in the Resource section and landing page of the the Society Website!
Enjoy deepening your contemplations as you track the movement and placement of the Sun as it spirals through the Gene Keys.
We are also pleased to announce the implimentation of an RSS Feed function.  RSS simply means Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary.
How it works:
‘Instead of checking back every day to any particular site to see if it’s been updated, RSS feeds give users the ability to simply subscribe to the RSS feed, much like you would subscribe to a newspaper, and then read the updates from the site, delivered via RSS feeds, in what’s called a feed reader. ‘ – excerpt from Lifewire.
The Gene Keys Society RSS Feed will notify you when a new Gene Key is posted for the Pulse or when we have new content posted into our What’s New Blog.
If you would like to be notified and receive updates of our changing content Subscribe here .
You will need to scroll down the page to the Pulse section and click the ‘RSS SUBSCRIBE’ button to receive updates into your feed reader.
We invite you to enjoy this feature as a great way to be plugged into your communtiy.

Society Survey

The Society will be sending out a survey in the month of July.  We celebrate the opportunity for the community to offer feedback on any and all experiences.  We value and encourage your participation, and anticipate the survey to provide us with useful information to shape and direct our current activities and future visions.

It is our intention to gather your responses so we know how best to serve the community.  We want to know how we’re doing in your eyes, where we are doing well and where we can improve.  Thank you in advance for your responses.

With Love From,

the Gene Keys Society
